Basketball

Basketball is a team sport in which two teams, typically consisting of five players each, compete to score points by shooting a ball through the opposing team’s hoop or basket, which is mounted 10 feet high on a backboard. The game is played on a rectangular court, and points are scored by making field goals, worth two or three points depending on the distance from which the shot is taken, and free throws, worth one point each. Players can advance the ball by dribbling (bouncing the ball while running) or passing it to teammates. The objective is to outscore the opponent within the game’s regulated time frame, which usually consists of four quarters or two halves, depending on the level of play. Basketball emphasizes skill in shooting, dribbling, passing, and defensive maneuvers, and is known for its fast pace and dynamic gameplay. The sport is governed by specific rules regarding fouls, violations like traveling and double dribble, and gameplay structure, and it has a significant global following, with professional leagues such as the NBA (National Basketball Association) being particularly prominent.
